Surge vs MakeUGC: the real pricing, and what each format buys

By Kyle White, founder of ClipSpeedAI · Updated 23 August 2026 · 7 min read

Before anything else, a correction, because the wrong number is the one currently circulating. MakeUGC sells credit tiers — 500, 1,000 and 2,000 credits at $59, $79 and $149 a month, with a $1 first period. A widely-shared comparison page prices it at "$49 for five videos a month" and builds its whole argument on that framing. Those tiers are not what MakeUGC sells. Everything below uses MakeUGC's own pricing page, read on 23 August 2026.

Why this page opens with a correction

Fastlane’s comparison page prices MakeUGC at "$49/month for 5 videos, $69 for 10, $119 for 20" and builds its central argument on that — 500 credits versus five videos. MakeUGC’s own pricing page, checked 2026-08-23, shows credit tiers of 500, 1,000 and 2,000 credits at $59, $79 and $149, with a $1 first period. The tiers Fastlane compares against are not the ones MakeUGC sells.

The reason it matters more than a typo is that the framing does the arguing. "Our $49 buys 500 credits, theirs buys five videos" is a devastating comparison — and it is a comparison against a product MakeUGC does not sell. Both tools are credit-metered. Check makeugc.ai/pricing before you spend anything, including against this page.

One honest caveat about the prices above: MakeUGC was displaying a 50% discount when the page was read, so the figures shown are the discounted ones. Promotional pricing moves. That is exactly why the date is attached.

How many formats does each tool make?

MakeUGC concentrates on talking-head video plus hooks, B-roll and image ads, while Surge produces three distinct formats — meme ads, numbered slideshows and creator posts — from separate libraries.

The format question is worth more thought than it usually gets, because "more formats" is not automatically better. A feed rewards variety — an account posting the same talking-head template forty times reads as a template — and running three formats from one tool is the cheap way to avoid that. That is Surge's argument.

The counter-argument is real: if talking-head UGC is the format that works for your product, a tool built entirely around it will do it better, and MakeUGC's custom avatars trained from your own footage are something Surge does not offer at all. Specialisation beats breadth when you already know which format converts.

Where MakeUGC genuinely wins

Which one gives you more for the money?

Both are credit-metered with comparable ladders, so the deciding factor is not volume but whether you want one format done deeply with an API behind it, or three formats generated from your website with no brief to write.

With the pricing corrected, the volume comparison is much less dramatic than the circulating version suggests. MakeUGC's Pro at $149 gives 2,000 credits; Surge's Ultra is also $149. Both meter generation, both let you make a lot of things, and neither is obviously cheaper per unit of useful output — which is a harder comparison to make than it looks, since a credit does not mean the same thing in both systems.

So the money question reduces to fit:

On trials, both are cheap to test and neither hides behind a sales call. MakeUGC offers $1 for a first period; Surge offers a free tier that needs no card at all, then $1 for three days. The evaluation cost for both is effectively zero, which is the right way round for tools in this category.

Which should you choose?

Choose MakeUGC for talking-head video at volume, in many languages, or through an API; choose Surge if you want three formats built from your website without writing a script.

Frequently asked questions

How much does MakeUGC cost?

MakeUGC's own pricing page on 23 August 2026 shows Startup at $59 a month for 500 credits, Growth at $79 for 1,000 credits, and Pro at $149 for 2,000 credits, all with a $1 first period. Separate API plans run $99 a month for 2,000 credits and $299 for 6,000. A 50% discount was being displayed when the page was read, so those are the discounted figures.

Is MakeUGC $49 for five videos a month?

No. That framing appears on a rival's comparison page but does not match what MakeUGC sells. MakeUGC prices in credits, not finished videos: 500, 1,000 and 2,000 credits at $59, $79 and $149 a month, each with a $1 first period. The comparison built on five-videos-for-$49 is arguing against a tier that does not exist.

Does MakeUGC have a free plan?

No free plan is listed, but all main tiers offer a $1 first period, so the cost of evaluating it is effectively nothing. Surge has a genuine free tier requiring no card, which builds ten finished ads a day for three days on your real website, followed by a $1 three-day trial if you want to continue.

Does MakeUGC publish to TikTok or Instagram?

No social publishing is described on MakeUGC's pricing page; it exports finished video in HD, 2K and 4K for you to distribute yourself. Surge does publish, since 23 August 2026, sending planned ads to TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, X or LinkedIn at the time you set. On distribution the two now differ.

Who has more AI creators, Surge or MakeUGC?

MakeUGC, which advertises over 1,000 realistic AI creators and 50+ languages. Surge has 33 AI UGC creators plus 93 real human creator clips and is English-first. Surge's counter is breadth of format rather than breadth of roster: it also produces meme ads and slideshows from 202 green-screen memes and 7,362 backgrounds, which MakeUGC does not focus on.

Which is better for a small business?

If you already know that talking-head video converts for your product, MakeUGC does that one thing deeply and has an API if you need it. If you are still working out which format lands, Surge gives you three formats from one subscription and builds them from your website URL rather than a script you have to write, which removes the step most small businesses actually get stuck on.
