Sora Alternatives in 2026: Where to Make AI Video Now That Sora Is Gone

Sora is gone. OpenAI shut the Sora app and website on April 26, 2026, then removed the Sora 2 models and the Videos API on September 24, 2026, without naming a replacement. The closest single swap is Google Flow, which pairs Gemini Omni Flash and Veo 3.1 with sound, prompt-based editing and a personal avatar. Kling 3.0 and Grok Imagine make 15-second takes with dialogue, Runway is strongest at editing footage you already have, and your old Sora videos can still be exported.

Prices and limits below were read on each provider's own pages on October 8, 2026.

What happened to Sora, and when?

OpenAI wound Sora down in two steps: the consumer app first, the developer API five months later. Its API deprecations page leaves the replacement column blank for every Sora model.

Export while you can: OpenAI says it will permanently delete Sora data after any final export window, and will email you before one starts. Credits bought for ChatGPT or Sora can still be spent in Codex. ChatGPT kept ChatGPT Images, now version 2.5, on every tier, but that makes stills, not video.

What did Sora do that you now need to replace?

No single product replaces all of Sora, so start from the job you used it for, then pick the tool.

Have long videos or streams? Clip those too.

Generators make new shots. For footage you already have, ClipSpeedAI finds the strongest moments, cuts them to vertical 9:16 and burns in captions, ready for Shorts, Reels and TikTok.

What does one clip cost on each alternative?

Here is roughly ten seconds of 720p with sound at each published rate.

Model and wherePublished rateOne clip (our arithmetic)
Gemini Omni Flash in Flow15 credits per 10 s at 720pAbout 66 clips from AI Pro's 1,000 monthly credits
Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash, Gemini APIAbout $0.10 per second at 720pAbout $1.00 per 10 s
Veo 3.1 Lite / Fast / Standard, Gemini API$0.05 / $0.10 / $0.40 per second at 720p$0.40 / $0.80 / $3.20 per 8 s clip
Kling 3.0 with native audio, Kling API$0.126 per second at 720p$1.26 per 10 s
Grok Imagine Video 1.5 / 1.5 Lite, xAI API$0.14 / $0.03 per second at 720p$1.40 / $0.30 per 10 s
Runway Gen-4.5, Standard plan12 credits per second; 625 credits cover 52 sAbout $2.88 per 10 s, no native audio listed

xAI lists lip-synced speech for Video 1.5 and plain generated audio for 1.5 Lite.

The rate is the floor, not the bill: a take that renders cleanly but misses the brief costs the same as a keeper. Google bills Veo 3.1 on the Gemini API only for successful generations, but a render you throw away still counts. Our AI video generation cost guide covers budgeting for retries.

Which alternative fits which Sora habit?

Google Flow: the broadest swap

Flow covers generation, editing and likeness in one place. Omni Flash makes 4- to 10-second clips from text, frames or ingredients, and editing a video costs 40 credits a run. Veo 3.1 Fast costs 20 credits a generation below Ultra, and Quality costs 100. The Gemini app adds video generation from the AI Plus plan up.

Where it falls short

Clips are short, and Omni extension is listed as coming soon. Without a subscription you may be unable to generate video at peak hours, roughly 2 PM to 5 PM UTC, and unused credits don't roll over.

Kling 3.0: longer takes with dialogue

Kling 3.0 makes 3- to 15-second clips with native speech in Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean and Spanish, and 3.0 Omni adds a multi-shot storyboard. Kling says Kling 4.0, with 30-second generation, launches officially in October 2026; a Flash version opened to a limited group on September 28.

Where it falls short

The membership page doesn't list a per-clip credit cost, so check it in the app before you buy. The API is sold in prepaid packages from $700, which is too much for casual use.

Runway: the editor's pick

Aleph 2.0 changes what you ask for in an existing clip and keeps the rest, across multiple shots. That is the closest thing to Sora's remix for footage you care about. Pro and Max add Seedance 2.5 and Runway's MCP, which works in ChatGPT and Claude.

Where it falls short

Runway's Gen-4.5 launch post doesn't mention native audio; music, voice and effects are separate tools. Standard and Pro credits reset each billing cycle.

Higgsfield: many models, one balance

Higgsfield hosts Seedance 2.5, Kling 3.0, Veo 3.1 and others under one credit balance, and its pricing page estimates about 80 Seedance 2.5 videos a month on Plus.

Where it falls short

That estimate doesn't state clip length or resolution, and Starter covers only Seedance 2.0 Fast and Mini. Unlimited generations work only on its website, not through its MCP. Its price list still showed Sora 2 rates on October 8, so test any Sora option once before buying credits for it.

Grok Imagine: the developer's Sora 2

Grok Imagine Video 1.5 is the closest API match to sora-2: text or image to video with lip-synced speech, 1 to 15 seconds, nine aspect ratios including 9:16, and up to 14 reference images.

Where it falls short

Voices cloned from your own audio are for trusted partners on request; everyone else picks presets. Editing runs on the older grok-imagine-video model, with source clips up to 8.7 seconds and output up to 720p.

How do you replace Sora characters?

Sora's characters let you record yourself once, then appear in any scene and invite friends in. The replacements are narrower.

  1. Create a Flow avatar. In a Flow project, select your profile picture, choose Create avatar and scan the QR code. The recording finishes on your phone and captures your face and voice.
  2. Call it in a prompt. Type @me in the prompt box and describe how the avatar should appear. You can delete it under Manage avatar.
  3. Or use a reference video. Kling 3.0 Omni picks up a character's look and voice from a clip you upload and reuses them in new scenes.

Flow avatar prompt:

@me as a lighthouse keeper in a yellow oilskin coat, climbing the last
spiral stairs at dawn and pushing open a salt-crusted door onto the gallery.
Wind catches the coat. Camera follows from two steps below, handheld.
I say one line to camera: "Twelve years, and it still takes my breath."
Ambience: gulls, surf, the door hinge. No music. 9:16, 10 seconds.
Where it falls short

Flow avatars aren't available in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, and avatar data can't be shared through Flow Tools or public project links, so a friend can't borrow yours. Only use a likeness you own or have written consent for. Our consistent AI characters guide covers series work.

How do you move your Sora work to a new tool?

  1. Export everything. On the sunset page, select Export and wait for the email. Save the files and, separately, the prompts behind your best clips.
  2. Sort by job. Tag each project as generate, remix or character, then pick a tool per tag from the list above.
  3. Rewrite beats for the new length. 8 seconds on Veo 3.1, 10 on Omni Flash, 15 on Kling 3.0 or Grok, 30 on Seedance 2.5.
  4. Set the shape explicitly. Ask for 9:16. Grok's image-to-video copies the start image's ratio, so crop the still first; see aspect ratios for short-form video.
  5. Draft cheap, finish once. Draft on Veo 3.1 Lite, Omni at 360p or Grok Lite, then render the keeper on the better tier.

Sora-era prompts were often one line. Newer models reward a full spec, so write down what the model would otherwise guess.

Sora-era prompt:

street taco cook flipping tortillas at night, cinematic, vertical

Rewritten for a 10-second model:

SCENE: One continuous 10-second vertical (9:16) shot in real time at a taco stand at night.
SUBJECT: Cook in her 40s, black bandana, white apron with a chile-red stain on the pocket,
silver hoop in her left ear. Same face and apron throughout.
LOCATION: Corner stall under a striped tarp, steel comal on a gas burner, stack of corn
tortillas, lime crates, wet street behind.
CAMERA: Chest height, 1 m in front of the comal, locked off. No zoom, no movement.
ACTION: 0-3 s she slaps a tortilla onto the comal; 3-6 s flips it with her fingertips;
6-9 s slides it onto a paper plate; 9-10 s looks up and nods at someone off camera.
LIGHTING: One bare warm bulb above the comal, blue street light behind as a rim.
AUDIO: Sizzle on each slap, burner hiss, distant traffic. She says "Next!" at 9 s. No music.
STYLE: Photoreal documentary look, light grain. No text, no logos, no subtitles.

To edit an old Sora clip in Omni Flash or Aleph 2.0, name one change and everything that must stay: "Make the jacket green. Keep her face, the camera, the timing and the sound unchanged." Our AI video prompt guide goes deeper on wording that carries over between models.

Where does ClipSpeed fit after Sora?

For most creators, the part of Sora that mattered was the last step: short clips in front of an audience. ClipSpeed's AI clipping handles that step for the footage you already have. Paste a YouTube or video link and it finds the strongest moments, cuts them to vertical 9:16 or 16:9, burns in the spoken words as captions in one of six styles and gives each clip a viral score. It also clips Twitch, Kick and YouTube streams while they are still live.

On the generation side, ClipSpeed's AI Creator brings five video models (Seedance 2.5, Kling 3.0 Turbo, MiniMax H3 Max, Veo 3.1 and Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash) and three image models (Nano Banana Pro, GPT Image 2.5 Flare and GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst) into one workspace, next to the clipping. From Claude or ChatGPT, the early-access ClipSpeed Create connector quotes each generation first and runs it only after the account owner approves the quote on a signed-in ClipSpeed page.

Which Sora alternative should you choose?

Whatever you generate with, the clips still need captions and a vertical cut before they post. Try ClipSpeedAI's clipping on the long videos you already have.

Sources and method

Every date, price and limit was read on the provider's own page on October 8, 2026. Plan prices are regular monthly list prices; per-clip costs are our arithmetic, and we ran no paid generations. We left out what we couldn't confirm on a primary page.

Got any questions left?

Is Sora still available anywhere?

No. OpenAI discontinued the Sora app and website on April 26, 2026 and shut down the Videos API, sora-2 and sora-2-pro on September 24, 2026, with no replacement named on its deprecations page.

Can I still download my old Sora videos?

Yes, as of October 8, 2026. Open the Sora sunset page, select Export, and OpenAI emails you when the file is ready. OpenAI says it will delete Sora data after any final export window and will email users before one begins, so export now.

What is the closest alternative to Sora 2?

For sound, editing and putting yourself in a scene, Google Flow. For longer takes with dialogue, Kling 3.0 or Grok Imagine Video 1.5 (up to 15 seconds) or Seedance 2.5 (up to 30).

Is there a free Sora alternative?

Google Flow gives every account 50 credits a day, enough for three 10-second 720p Gemini Omni Flash clips, though video can be unavailable at peak hours without a subscription. Runway's free plan includes 125 one-time credits.

Can ChatGPT make videos now that Sora is gone?

Not on its own. ChatGPT Images makes stills; video comes from plugins such as Runway's or Higgsfield's. Our guide to generating AI video from Claude or ChatGPT covers setup and spend approvals.

What should developers use instead of the Sora API?

The Gemini API (Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash at about $0.10 a second for 720p, or Veo 3.1 from $0.05 a second on Lite), xAI's Grok Imagine API (from $0.02 a second on Video 1.5 Lite at 480p) or Kling's prepaid API packages.
