You export something that looks clean, upload it, and TikTok hands back a softer, blockier version with visible banding in the shadows. Nothing you did caused it directly, and there is no hidden quality setting that fixes it. What you can do is stop giving the encoder reasons to work harder.

Why TikTok degrades your video

Every upload is re-encoded so it can be delivered cheaply to phones on variable connections. That re-encode is not negotiable. What varies is how much work it has to do, and the more your file differs from what the platform expects, the more aggressive the result.

Record high, export at 1080

Recording in 4K and exporting at 1080x1920 is genuinely worth doing, and it is not the same as uploading 4K. The extra capture detail survives the downscale as sharper edges and cleaner gradients in the 1080 file — so the encoder receives a better 1080 frame than a native 1080 recording would have given it. Uploading the 4K file itself just adds size for a result that gets downscaled anyway.

Four things that quietly cost you quality

  1. Re-exporting an already-compressed file. Every round trip through an encoder loses detail permanently. Edit from the original recording, not from a downloaded copy of your own post.
  2. Screen-recording a video instead of exporting it. A capture of a playing video is a second generation before you start.
  3. Heavy grain, confetti or fast noise. These are expensive to encode and the encoder pays for them by degrading everything else in the frame. If a clip has to have them, give it more bitrate.
